About this service

What is trauma counselling?

In-person trauma therapy is built on safety, and for many people safety is easier to feel in a grounded, private room than through a screen. A registered psychotherapist paces the work carefully, face to face, so processing only happens once you have steady footing.

At Counselling Toronto — by McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare — every session happens face to face with a registered psychotherapist (or closely supervised clinician) at one of our Ontario offices, and every plan starts with a free consultation so you know the fit, the approach and the cost before you commit to anything.

Signs it's worth reaching out

Certain places, dates or sensations set off outsized reactions
Nightmares, flashbacks or intrusive memories
You feel constantly on guard — or strangely numb
Relationships hit the same walls of trust and distance
You've minimized it for years ('others had it worse') but it still runs your life

Our approach

Evidence-based methods, matched to you

No single method fits everyone. In the room, your therapist can read what's working in real time and draw on approaches with real research behind them — adjusting to how you work best.

Trauma-focused CBT

Structured, evidence-based processing of traumatic memories once safety and coping are established.

Phase-based trauma therapy

Stabilize first, process second, reconnect third — the pacing that makes trauma work safe and effective.

Somatic & grounding techniques

Trauma lives in the body; regulation skills give you steady ground before, during and after the deeper work.

Getting started

What to expect — three simple steps

1

Free consultation

Tell us what's going on and what you're hoping for. No commitment, no cost.

2

Meet your counsellor

We match you with a registered psychotherapist who fits your needs and style.

3

Begin the work

Start weekly or bi-weekly sessions, in person in Ontario or by secure video.

Trauma therapy begins with stabilization: understanding your triggers, learning grounding and regulation skills, and building enough safety to do deeper work. Processing the trauma itself comes second, and only with your consent — good trauma therapy never forces you to relive anything before you're ready.

Where & how

In person in Ontario, or virtual across Ontario

In person — Toronto

Warm, private offices in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton — with evening and weekend appointments so face-to-face therapy fits a working week.

Virtual — anywhere in Ontario

Secure, privacy-compliant video sessions with the same registered psychotherapists. Ideal for busy schedules, parents, and anyone outside Toronto.

Because we have offices in Toronto, Brampton and Mississauga, in-person therapy is realistic across most of the GTA and beyond — pick the location that's the shortest trip from home or work, and switch to secure video on the weeks getting there isn't practical.

Good to know

Trauma Counselling in Ontario, answered

Will I have to talk about what happened right away?
No. Trauma-informed therapy starts with safety and coping skills. You control the pace, and processing only begins when you're ready.
Can counselling help with trauma from long ago?
Yes. Childhood and past trauma remain very treatable — many people see the biggest shifts in patterns they've carried for decades.
What's the difference between trauma and PTSD?
PTSD is a specific diagnosis with symptoms like flashbacks and hypervigilance; many people have trauma effects without full PTSD. Counselling helps in both cases.
Is virtual trauma counselling safe and effective?
Yes — with a registered psychotherapist, video sessions are effective for trauma work and can feel safer for some people. In-person is available in Ontario.
Do you offer evening and weekend appointments?
Yes — many of our registered psychotherapists offer evenings and weekends, both in person and by secure video, so counselling can fit around work and family.
How do I get started?
Book a free consultation online or by phone. We'll match you with a registered psychotherapist who fits your needs, and most people have their first session within the same week.
