About this service

What is depression counselling?

In-person depression therapy offers something depression makes hard to reach on your own: the steadying presence of another person in the room. A registered psychotherapist meets you face to face, keeps the pace gentle, and helps you rebuild momentum one real, in-person session at a time.

At Counselling Toronto — by McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare — every session happens face to face with a registered psychotherapist (or closely supervised clinician) at one of our Ontario offices, and every plan starts with a free consultation so you know the fit, the approach and the cost before you commit to anything.

Our approach

Evidence-based methods, matched to you

No single method fits everyone. In the room, your therapist can read what's working in real time and draw on approaches with real research behind them — adjusting to how you work best.

Behavioural activation

Depression shrinks life; this rebuilds it deliberately, starting with the smallest realistic steps — often the fastest early wins.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Targets the self-critical, hopeless thought patterns depression runs on, and teaches you to answer them.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)

Focuses on the relationships, roles and losses that low mood is tangled with — powerful when depression followed a life change.

Getting started

What to expect — three simple steps

1

Free consultation

Tell us what's going on and what you're hoping for. No commitment, no cost.

2

Meet your counsellor

We match you with a registered psychotherapist who fits your needs and style.

3

Begin the work

Start weekly or bi-weekly sessions, in person in Ontario or by secure video.

Early sessions focus on understanding your depression and finding the smallest realistic steps that rebuild momentum — behavioural activation is often where change starts. As energy returns, you'll work on the thinking patterns and circumstances underneath the low mood. Counselling also works well alongside medication if that's part of your plan.

Good to know

Depression Counselling in Ontario, answered

How is depression counselling different from just talking to someone?
It's structured and evidence-based: your counsellor uses specific approaches (CBT, behavioural activation) shown in research to reduce depression, and tracks progress with you.
What if I don't have the energy for therapy?
That's built into the approach. Sessions can start small — even virtual from your couch — and behavioural activation is designed precisely for low-energy starting points.
Is depression counselling in Ontario covered by insurance?
Most extended health plans cover registered psychotherapists. Sessions start at $110 and receipts are provided for reimbursement.
Should I do counselling or medication?
Many people do either or both — combined treatment often works best for moderate to severe depression. Counselling pairs well with whatever you and your doctor decide.
Do you offer evening and weekend appointments?
Yes — many of our registered psychotherapists offer evenings and weekends, both in person and by secure video, so counselling can fit around work and family.
How do I get started?
Book a free consultation online or by phone. We'll match you with a registered psychotherapist who fits your needs, and most people have their first session within the same week.
