About this service

What is grief counselling?

In-person grief therapy is simply a room where your loss is allowed to take up space, with a registered psychotherapist beside you. There's a particular comfort in being physically present with someone who can sit in the hard moments with you — no screen, no lag, no performing 'fine'.

At Counselling Toronto — by McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare — every session happens face to face with a registered psychotherapist (or closely supervised clinician) at one of our Ontario offices, and every plan starts with a free consultation so you know the fit, the approach and the cost before you commit to anything.

Signs it's worth reaching out

You don't need to be in crisis to book an in-person session. If any of these feel familiar, coming in for a free consultation is a low-pressure way to see what face-to-face support could do.

The waves still hit as hard as week one, months later
Guilt, anger or relief you don't know what to do with
People have stopped asking, but you're far from okay
A date, a song, a place still knocks the wind out of you
You hold it together at work, then come undone at home

Our approach

Evidence-based methods, matched to you

No single method fits everyone. In the room, your therapist can read what's working in real time and draw on approaches with real research behind them — adjusting to how you work best.

In-person grief support

Follows your grief rather than a schedule — space to speak the loss fully, with support for the practical and emotional adjustments.

Rebuilding meaning, in the room

Gently rebuilds a sense of identity and future around the loss, without pressure to 'move on' from the person or thing you lost.

Support for grief that won't lift

When grief stays disabling past a year, structured approaches specifically for complicated grief have strong evidence.

Getting started

What to expect — three simple steps

1

Free consultation

Tell us what's going on and what you're hoping for. No commitment, no cost.

2

Meet your counsellor

We match you with a registered psychotherapist who fits your needs and style.

3

Begin the work

Start weekly or bi-weekly sessions, in person in Ontario or by secure video.

Sessions follow your grief, not a script. Early on, that often means simply having a place where the loss can be fully spoken. Over time, counselling helps with the practical and emotional adjustments, the relationships around you, and the guilt or 'what ifs' that keep many people stuck. You set the pace throughout.

In person — Toronto

Warm, private offices in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton — with evening and weekend appointments so face-to-face therapy fits a working week.

Virtual — anywhere in Ontario

Secure, privacy-compliant video sessions with the same registered psychotherapists. Ideal for busy schedules, parents, and anyone outside Toronto.

Good to know

Grief Counselling in Ontario, answered

How soon after a loss should I start grief counselling?
Whenever you feel you need support — some people come within weeks, others years later. There's no 'too early' or 'too late'.
Is what I'm feeling normal?
Grief includes far more than sadness — anger, numbness, guilt and even relief are all common. Counselling helps you understand your own grief rather than judging it.
What is complicated grief?
When grief stays as intense and disabling as the earliest days for a year or more, it may be prolonged grief — a treatable condition that responds well to structured counselling.
Can I do grief counselling online in Ontario?
Yes — many grieving clients prefer video sessions from home. In-person sessions are also available in Ontario.
Do you offer evening and weekend appointments?
Yes — many of our registered psychotherapists offer evenings and weekends, both in person and by secure video, so counselling can fit around work and family.
How do I get started?
Book a free consultation online or by phone. We'll match you with a registered psychotherapist who fits your needs, and most people have their first session within the same week.
